Here's something a lot of people don't think about when they book a cruise:
Your cruise vacation doesn't really start on embarkation day. It starts with how you get there.
If your cruise leaves on Saturday, I almost always recommend arriving near the port on Friday whenever you can.
Why Arrive the Day Before?
Because same-day travel leaves very little room for anything to go wrong. And travel days can come with plenty of surprises:
✈️ Flight delays
🔁 Missed connections
🌧️ Weather issues
❌ Cancelled flights
🚗 Traffic near the port
🧳 Baggage delays
⏳ Long shuttle or rideshare waits
Any one of these can turn an easy morning into a stressful one. And here's the hard truth:
The ship will not wait because your flight was late.
If you miss the ship, it's on you to catch up with it at the next port, and that can get expensive and stressful fast. That's not how anyone wants to start a vacation.
Why a Pre-Cruise Hotel Night Is Worth It
A pre-cruise hotel night can be one of the smartest parts of the whole trip. Here's what it gives you:
Breathing room. If your flight is delayed, you still make it.
A better embarkation morning. You wake up close to the port, grab breakfast, and head over on time.
Less stress for the kids (and you!). Nobody is rushing through the airport with a "we HAVE to make this" feeling.
More excitement. The night before feels like the trip has already started. That's the vibe we want.
A Few Tips for Your Pre-Cruise Night
Book a hotel near the port, especially one with an easy ride to the terminal.
Plan how you'll get to the ship ahead of time, so you're not scrambling for a ride that morning.
Keep your important stuff in your carry-on, like documents, medications, and swimsuits, in case your bag takes a while to get to your room.
Check your port arrival time from online check-in so you know exactly when to head over.
This Is Where I Help
When I plan a cruise, I'm not just booking the ship. I help with the whole trip: flights (if needed), a pre-cruise hotel, and how you'll get from the airport to the hotel to the port.
The goal isn't just to get you on the ship.
It's to help you start the trip calm, prepared, and ready to enjoy it.
