Your Guide to Disney World Resorts — Which Category Is Right for Your Family?

One of the questions I get asked most often as a Disney travel advisor is this: which hotel should we stay at?

And honestly? It's one of my favorite questions to answer. Because the resort you choose shapes your entire Disney experience — not just where you sleep, but how you feel for the whole trip. The pace of your mornings. The magic your kids encounter the moment they step off the bus. Whether you collapse into bed at the end of the day feeling like you escaped into another world or just... went to sleep.

Disney World has over 25 resort hotels spread across four categories: Value, Moderate, Deluxe, and Disney Vacation Club. Each one has a different price point, a different feel, and a different type of family it's perfect for.

Let me walk you through all of them — honestly, the way I'd explain it to a friend — so you can figure out exactly where your family belongs.

Value Resorts — The Smart Choice More People Should Consider

The Value resorts are Disney's most affordable on-property option and they get a reputation they don't entirely deserve. Yes they're budget-friendly. But they are still Disney — which means the theming is immersive, the service is warm, and you are still fully inside the Disney bubble from the moment you arrive.

The current Value resorts are All-Star Movies, All-Star Music, All-Star Sports, Pop Century, and Art of Animation.

Pop Century and Art of Animation are the standouts of this category. Pop Century celebrates American pop culture decade by decade with giant icons and a nostalgic, playful energy that guests absolutely love. Art of Animation is in its own class — themed to Finding Nemo, Cars, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid, with family suites that sleep six people and are genuinely stunning. If you have a family of five or six, Art of Animation's suites are one of the best values on all of Disney property regardless of category.

Value resorts are the right choice if: budget is your primary consideration, you plan to spend most of your time in the parks, you have a larger family who needs the suite option at Art of Animation, or this is a first Disney trip and you want to maximize the budget for experiences.

Moderate Resorts — The Sweet Spot

The Moderate resorts are where a lot of families land — and for good reason. The price point is manageable, the theming is significantly more elaborate than the Values, the pools are some of the best on property, and the overall experience feels like a genuine resort rather than a place you're just sleeping.

The current Moderate resorts are Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs, Port Orleans French Quarter, Port Orleans Riverside, and Fort Wilderness Cabins.

Caribbean Beach is bright, colorful, and sprawling — with a beautiful lakeside setting and a recently renovated interior that feels fresh and fun. Coronado Springs has a stunning tower addition called Gran Destino that bridges the gap between Moderate and Deluxe — the lobby alone is breathtaking. Port Orleans Riverside is my personal favorite in this category — beautiful Southern plantation theming, gorgeous grounds, Royal Rooms themed to Cinderella and her princess friends that are perfect for little girls, and an overall atmosphere that feels peaceful and romantic.

Moderate resorts are the right choice if: you want a step up from the Values without the Deluxe price tag, you value beautiful theming and resort atmosphere, you have a family with kids who will appreciate the themed pools and elaborate surroundings, or you want the Royal Rooms experience for a little Disney princess in your life.

Deluxe Resorts — The Full Magic Experience

This is where Disney resort design reaches its peak. The Deluxe resorts are extraordinary — immersive, breathtaking, and in many cases destinations in their own right. Staying at a Disney Deluxe resort is not just where you sleep — it's part of the experience.

The Deluxe resorts include the Grand Floridian, Polynesian Village, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Beach Club, Yacht Club, BoardWalk, and the Riviera Resort.

Let me highlight a few that deserve their own moment:

Animal Kingdom Lodge is in a category by itself. The resort sits on a private savanna where real African wildlife — giraffes, zebras, flamingos, more than 30 species — roam just outside your window. Waking up and opening your curtains to a giraffe walking past is not something you forget. Ever. For families with animal-loving kids (hello it’s me) this is the most magical resort on all of Disney property in my opinion.

Grand Floridian is Disney's flagship luxury resort — Victorian architecture, impeccable service, a location right on the monorail line steps from Magic Kingdom, and a level of elegance that makes every moment feel special. If you're celebrating something significant — an anniversary, a milestone birthday, a honeymoon — this is where you go.

Polynesian Village has some of the best Magic Kingdom views on property. The zero-entry pool is incredible for families with little ones. And the location on the monorail loop means you can be at Magic Kingdom in minutes. There's also something about the South Pacific theming — the torches, the music, the warm tropical atmosphere — that creates an immediate feeling of escape the moment you arrive.

Beach Club is my top recommendation for families who prioritize pool time. Stormalong Bay — the resort's shared pool with Yacht Club — is the best pool on Disney property. Full stop. It's a three-acre mini water park with a lazy river, a waterslide built into a shipwreck, a sand-bottomed pool, and water features for little ones. If you're going in summer and your family loves the water, Beach Club is worth every penny. Plus the location of being able to walk to EPCOT or be a quick boat right, skyliner ride or walk to Hollywood Studios is perfection in itself. (Plus this is where my husband and I stayed on our Disneymoon so it’s extra special to us).

Wilderness Lodge is underrated and I will say it every time. Stunning Pacific Northwest National Park theming, a gorgeous lobby with a massive stone fireplace, beautiful wooded grounds, and a location on the water with boat access to Magic Kingdom. It feels like a completely different world from the rest of Walt Disney World and that contrast is exactly what makes it special.

Deluxe resorts are the right choice if: the resort experience itself is important to you, you want to maximize every moment of the Disney bubble, you're celebrating something special, you have animal lovers who would lose their minds at Animal Kingdom Lodge, or you simply want the best.

Disney Vacation Club — A Word About the DVC Resorts

You'll notice some of the resort names include DVC — Disney Vacation Club — properties. These resorts operate on a timeshare model but their villas are also available to book as standard guests without owning DVC points.

The Riviera Resort, Saratoga Springs, Old Key West, Bay Lake Tower, Boulder Ridge Villas, and Copper Creek Villas are all DVC properties. They tend to offer villa-style accommodations with kitchenettes or full kitchens, living areas, and more space than a standard hotel room — which makes them particularly appealing for larger families or extended stays.

If a DVC villa is interesting to you, I'm happy to help you navigate those options as part of your booking.

So which resort is right for your family?

Honestly? That depends on a few things I'd want to know about you specifically:

How much time do you plan to spend at the resort versus the parks? What's your budget and where do you want to allocate it — resort or experiences? Do you have little ones who need a great pool and easy rest time? Are you celebrating something special? Do you have animal lovers, water lovers, or kids who are obsessed with a specific Disney film? Is there a certain park area you’d like to be close to or concerned about transportation?

These are exactly the kinds of questions I ask every single client before I make a recommendation — because the right resort for one family is completely wrong for another. And making that match correctly is one of the most satisfying parts of my job.
