Is That Matty Is Here — And Diego Is About to Have His Best Glow-Up Yet
If you've been around here for any amount of time, you know two things about me.
One: I am deeply committed to clean, intentional ingredients in everything I put on my skin. It's why I love Olive Tree People. It's why I talk about hydroxytyrosol and waterless beauty and what I'm actually putting in and on my body.
Two: Diego is family.
He's not a pet who lives in the background of our life. He's in the Sunday reset photos. He gets his food made from scratch — real ingredients, nothing processed — because that's just how we do things in this house. He's Lennon's best friend and honestly one of mine too.
So when Olive Tree People launched Is That Matty — their brand new dog-specific wellness line — I had approximately zero seconds of hesitation.
Clean ingredients. Thoughtfully formulated. For dogs. From a brand I already trust with my own skin.
Diego's glow-up era has officially begun. 🐾
The story behind the name
I want to start here because it matters.
Is That Matty was created by OTP founder Thomas Lommel in honor of his dog Matty, who passed away in February 2025. Matty was a beloved presence in Venice Beach — so well known that strangers would stop Thomas on the street and ask "is that Matty?" That question became the name. That love became the line.
Knowing that this product was born out of genuine devotion to a dog who was deeply loved — that means something to me. This isn't a brand trying to cash in on the pet wellness trend. This is a founder channeling grief into something that could protect and nourish dogs the way he wished he could have protected his.
That's the kind of brand I want to support.
Why your dog's skin needs more than what's on the shelf
Before I get into the products I want to share some of what Dr. Lindsey — who educated our community on this launch — explained about dog skin, because it genuinely changed the way I think about what I've been putting on Diego.
Dog skin is significantly thinner than human skin. Where we have 10–15 outer barrier layers, dogs have only 3–5. That means they are more vulnerable to irritation, allergens, inflammation, and harsh ingredients than we are. What feels mild to us can be genuinely disruptive to their skin barrier.
And here's something that stopped me: allergic skin disease is one of the top reasons dogs are brought into veterinary clinics. Many dogs get caught in a cycle of itching, scratching, broken skin, bacteria, yeast, and more inflammation — and the products we're using to bathe them can actually make it worse if they're stripping the skin barrier rather than supporting it.
Most pet shampoos are 70–80% water. That dilutes the active ingredients and requires more preservatives to keep the formula stable. Is That Matty uses olive fruit juice and oil as the base — which means the formula is bioactive from the very first ingredient. No filler. No dilution. Just the good stuff.
Sound familiar? It's the same philosophy behind everything OTP makes for humans. And it makes just as much sense for our dogs.
The key ingredients doing the work
Every product in the Is That Matty line is built around a thoughtful ingredient profile designed specifically for canine skin:
Hydroxytyrosol — the hero ingredient in all OTP products, now for dogs. Antioxidant, calming, and antimicrobial support for irritated, reactive skin.
Silver — additional antimicrobial support, particularly helpful for dogs prone to skin infections.
Oat kernel flour — gentle soothing during cleansing, especially helpful for itchy or inflamed skin.
Shea butter + olive fruit oil — moisture and barrier support to leave the coat and skin nourished rather than stripped.
Chamomile + calendula — calming support for irritated, reactive, or sensitive skin.
This is not a list of ingredients I have to google to understand. These are ingredients I recognize and trust — and seeing them formulated specifically for dogs makes complete sense.
The four products — what they do and why they matter
🐶 Grooming Shampoo
This is your foundation. Designed for healthy dogs, itchy dogs, allergy-prone dogs, and dogs who need gentle cleansing without stripping the skin barrier. Dr. Lindsey recommends letting it sit for 5–10 minutes when possible before rinsing — which gives the active ingredients time to actually do their work. Use lukewarm or cool water, never hot. Diego is about to have the most intentional bath of his life.
🐶 Grooming Rinse
Don't think of this as optional conditioner — it's not. The rinse is designed to restore moisture, support the skin barrier, and make the bath restorative rather than just cleansing. After the shampoo does the work of cleaning, the rinse does the work of rebuilding. Together they're a complete system, not two separate products.
🐾 Paw Balm
This one I'm especially excited about for Diego because paws take a beating. Grass, pollen, pavement, salt, environmental allergens — every walk exposes them. The Paw Balm is designed to condition paws after walks and is also helpful for dry noses, rough elbows, calluses, and senior dogs with dry patches. If your dog licks their paws constantly or comes in from walks with red irritated pads — this is worth trying.
🚨 SOS Rescue Gel
Think of this as your first aid product. Hot spots, bug bites, irritated patches, redness, inflamed areas between the toes and paws — the SOS Rescue Gel is your go-to for anything that needs immediate targeted attention. This is the product I'm going to keep on hand the way I keep my OTP SOS gel on hand for my own skin. Because things happen and you want to be ready.
The Bundle
All four products together, which saves you about $40 off purchasing individually. If you're starting fresh with this line — and honestly if you're reading this post you probably should be — the bundle is the move.
A few important notes from Dr. Lindsey
If you use topical flea and tick products on your dog — bathe either 48 hours before or 48 hours after application. Not the same day.
Cats are not officially approved for this line yet. Dr. Lindsey wants a formulation review first given how heavily cats groom. So for now — dogs only.
And lukewarm or cool water always. Not hot. Your dog's skin barrier will thank you.
