Travel Tip Tuesday: The “Carry-On Insurance” List ✈️
(aka: what I never check)
Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention when planning a trip…
What happens if your luggage doesn’t make it when you do?
Because as much as we love a smooth travel day, the reality is—delays and lost bags happen more often than we’d like.
And when they do, it can either completely derail your trip…
or just be a minor inconvenience.
The difference?
👉 What you packed in your carry-on.
What is “Carry-On Insurance”?
I like to think of my carry-on as my insurance policy for travel days.
It’s everything I need to:
Still feel like myself
Stay comfortable
Be presentable
And actually start enjoying my trip—even if my suitcase is somewhere else
Especially as a mom, this has saved me more than once 🙃
My Carry-On Essentials (Never Checked)
Here’s exactly what I always keep with me on the plane:
✔️ Medications
Anything you take daily + an extra day or two, just in case.
This is non-negotiable.
✔️ Passport/ID + Wallet
All travel documents stay with me—always.
No exceptions.
✔️ Phone Charger + Portable Battery
Airports, delays, long travel days… your phone WILL need backup power.
✔️ One Change of Clothes
Think: underwear, socks, and a simple outfit.
If your luggage is delayed, you’ll be so glad you packed this.
✔️ Toiletry Minis
Toothbrush, deodorant, contacts/glasses, face wash—just the basics to feel human again.
✔️ Anything Valuable or Hard to Replace
Jewelry, electronics, camera, sentimental items…
If losing it would ruin your trip, it goes in your carry-on.
✔️ Work or Medical Essentials
Things like CPAP parts, braces, or anything you absolutely need access to.
✔️ Swimsuit (for Beach Trips ☀️)
This one is underrated—but TRUST me.
If your bags are delayed and you’re headed somewhere warm, you’ll be so glad you packed it.
✔️ Snacks
Especially if you’re traveling with kids or have a long travel day ahead.
Snacks = sanity.
✔️ A Lightweight Layer
Planes are unpredictable—one minute you’re freezing, the next you’re fine.
A sweatshirt or light jacket is always in my bag.
Mom Tip: Make It Work for You
If you’re traveling with kids, multiply this list by at least 1.5 😅
I always make sure Lennon has:
An extra outfit
Snacks she’ll actually eat
Comfort items (because travel days can be a lot for little ones)
Because a prepared mom = a much smoother travel day.
Pro Tip You’ll Thank Yourself For Later 👇
If you’re checking a bag:
✔️ Toss an AirTag (or tracker) inside
✔️ Take a quick photo of your suitcase before you check it
If anything gets delayed or lost, this makes the process so much easier and faster.
Final Thoughts
Travel is supposed to be fun—not stressful.
And while we can’t control everything, we can set ourselves up to handle the unexpected.
Your carry-on isn’t just a bag…
it’s your backup plan, your comfort kit, and your peace of mind all in one.
If this was helpful, save it for your next trip ✈️
And tell me—what’s ONE thing you always keep in your carry-on no matter what? 👇
xoxo,
Katie
