Mom Hack Monday: How We Reorganized Our Game Closet (and Got SO Much Space Back) 🎲✨

If your house is anything like ours… games somehow multiply overnight 😅

Between family game nights, kid favorites, and all the “just one more” purchases, our game/coat closet had turned into a completely overstuffed mess.

Boxes stacked. Pieces everywhere. And somehow the one game we actually wanted was always at the bottom 🙃

So I finally decided…
👉 we needed a better system.

The Problem with Game Boxes

Here’s the thing no one really talks about:

👉 Game boxes take up SO much unnecessary space.

They’re bulky, awkward to stack, and usually half full of air.

Which is fine… until you’re trying to maximize space in a real-life home (not a Pinterest pantry 😂).

The Simple Hack That Changed Everything

Instead of keeping everything in the original boxes…

👉 I switched to zipper storage bags for the games.

These are the exact ones I used:
Mesh Zipper Storage Bags I Used

They come in multiple sizes and are:

  • Durable

  • Reusable

  • Slightly see-through so you can see what’s inside

  • Perfect for organizing everything from toys to puzzles

What I Did (Super Simple)

Here’s exactly how I transformed our closet:

1️⃣ Took Games Out of the Boxes

Yep… I said it.

I removed the bulky boxes (for most games) and kept:

  • Game pieces

  • Cards

  • Dice

  • Instructions

2️⃣ Cut Out the Game Titles

I cut the title off the original box and turned it into a label.

👉 This makes it SO easy to know what’s in each bag without digging.

3️⃣ Added the Label to the Zipper

I attached the label right to the zipper so everything feels organized and intentional (not just thrown in a bag).

4️⃣ Sorted Everything Into Bags

Each game got its own bag—and suddenly…

✨ Everything took up WAY less space
✨ No more sliding stacks of boxes
✨ Way easier for Lennon to grab and put back

What Stayed in Boxes

Now—this didn’t work for every single game.

Some games just:

  • Have larger boards

  • Or don’t fit well into bags

👉 Those took priority on the shelf.

So instead of trying to force everything into one system, I used a hybrid approach:

  • Bags for most games

  • Shelf space for the few that needed it

The Result = SO Much More Space

I cannot even explain how much better this closet feels now.

It’s:

  • Cleaner

  • Easier to maintain

  • Way more functional

And best of all…

👉 We can actually SEE and use our games again.

Mom Win: Lennon Can Help 🎉

One of my favorite parts of this?

Lennon can easily:

  • Grab a game

  • Help clean up

  • Put things back where they belong

Which means less work for me 🙌

Why This Hack Works So Well

This is one of those simple shifts that:

  • Maximizes small spaces

  • Reduces clutter

  • Makes everyday life easier

And it’s not just for games—you could use this for:

  • Puzzles

  • Craft supplies

  • Toys

  • Travel activities

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a bigger house…
sometimes you just need a better system.

This took a little time upfront, but it has made such a difference in our day-to-day life.

And anything that makes mom life easier?
👉 I’m all in.

Save this for your next home reset 🏡✨
And tell me—are you team “keep the boxes” or ready to ditch them like I did? 😄

xoxo,
Katie
