Travel Tip Tuesday: Why "Sleeps Five" Doesn't Always Mean Comfortable

A hotel room that sleeps five may technically fit five people... but that does not always mean five people will be comfortable.

This is one of those details that's easy to gloss over when you're booking — you see the guest count, it matches your family size, and you click book. But "sleeps five" can mean a lot of different things depending on the property, and not all of them are created equal.

Sometimes "sleeps five" means two beds and a pull-out sofa. Sometimes it's one queen bed plus bunk beds. Sometimes it's a daybed or trundle that's really better suited for a child than an adult. And sometimes it just means very limited floor space once everyone's luggage is actually in the room.

Before you book, it's worth asking a few practical questions:

What is the actual bed setup? Don't rely on the guest count alone. Ask specifically what beds are in the room and where they are.

Who is sleeping where? A room that works beautifully for 2 adults and 3 small kids may not work the same way for teens or adults. Think through your actual family, not just the number of people.

How much space will you really have? Sleeping capacity and comfort are not the same thing. A room can technically fit everyone and still feel cramped the moment bags come out.

How many bathrooms are there? This can make a huge difference for families, especially with a group that's trying to get out the door at the same time every morning.

Would a suite or connecting rooms make more sense? Sometimes paying a little more up front creates a much better overall trip — more space, more privacy, and a lot less stepping over each other.

The goal isn't just to make everyone fit. It's to make sure everyone can actually rest and enjoy the vacation.

This is exactly the kind of detail I dig into with my clients when we're planning a trip — because the best itinerary in the world doesn't matter much if nobody slept well. If you're booking your next family trip and want help figuring out the right room setup, I'd love to help. It's part of what I do, and it's free to you.
