Travel Horror Stories: The Nightmares I Help You Avoid 👻✈️

It's Halloween week, friends, so grab your candy corn and turn down the lights. I have some scary stories to tell you.

Not ghosts. Not haunted houses. Something much scarier: travel mistakes. 😱

These are the kinds of things I hear about all the time from families who booked on their own. And the scariest part? Almost every one of them could have been avoided.

🚢 The Ship That Sailed Without Them

The family booked their dream cruise and saved a little money by flying in the morning of embarkation day. Then the flight was delayed. Then delayed again. By the time they made it to the port, the ship was already pulling away.

The ship doesn't wait. Catching up with it at the next port can mean new flights, a hotel, and a lot of tears.

How I help: I build in a pre-cruise hotel night near the port whenever possible, so a delayed flight is an inconvenience, not a disaster.

🛂 The Passport That Expired in the Fine Print

The passport was valid! Technically. But many countries require your passport to be valid for several months beyond your travel dates. That's a hard lesson to learn at the airport check-in counter.

How I help: I remind you to check every passport (yes, the kids' too) well before your trip, and I point you to the entry rules for where you're going.

🛏️ The Room That Didn't Fit the Family

It looked perfect online. Then they realized the room sleeps four. They're a family of five. And yes, at Disney, babies count toward the room's occupancy.

How I help: I look at room capacity, bed setup, and room category before you fall in love with a photo (more on that in my room photo Travel Tip Tuesday).

🍽️ The Disney Trip With Zero Dining Reservations

They arrived at Disney World ready for character meals and princesses... and found out the reservations had opened 60 days earlier. Everything they wanted was gone.

How I help: I'm up early the morning your window opens, booking your must-dos. And if something is already gone, I keep tracking cancellations until it opens back up.

⚡ The Lightning Lane Window They Didn't Know About

They planned to "figure out Lightning Lane when we get there." By then, the best return times for their must-do rides were long gone.

How I help: I know your booking window (7 days before your stay for Disney resort guests, 3 days for everyone else), and we build your Lightning Lane plan before it opens.

🌀 The Hurricane With No Backup Plan

A storm rolled in the week of the trip. The trip had to change, and there was no travel insurance and no idea what the cancellation policy said.

How I help: I walk you through cancellation policies and travel insurance options before you book, especially for trips during hurricane season (June through November).

📞 The Change That Ended in an Endless Hold

Plans changed. A kid got sick, a work trip popped up. They booked through a third-party website and spent hours on hold trying to figure out who could even help them.

How I help: You have me. One person who knows your trip, answers your texts, and handles the changes for you.

The Not-So-Scary Ending 🤍

Here's the good news: these stories don't have to be yours. Most travel nightmares come from small details that are easy to miss when you're juggling work, school, and everything else. Catching those details is my whole job.

As a licensed Travelmation travel agent who specializes in all things Disney, I keep track of the deadlines, booking windows, and fine print, so the only scary thing about your trip is Tower of Terror. 😉
