THE MAGIC OF DISNEY ANIMATION: We Have an Opening Date — and I Am Not Okay 😭✨
I have been waiting for this announcement since the courtyard opened, yall!
Walt Disney World just revealed that The Magic of Disney Animation, a brand-new collection of animation-inspired experiences, will open on September 14, 2026 at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
September 14th. Circle it. Put it in your phone. Tell your kids.
And if you have been waiting to book a fall Disney trip — hi. Hello. This is your sign. Let me tell you everything we know about what's inside.
What Is The Magic of Disney Animation?
The Magic of Disney Animation takes over the space that was formerly home to Star Wars: Launch Bay, sitting at the center of the reimagined Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard — giving the area a clear focal point that guests have been walking past for months while the interior work continued.
Housed in a building inspired by the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, California, The Magic of Disney Animation invites guests to interact with and explore new takes on the iconic Disney Animation headquarters, including the many different studio departments. Inspired by the Emmy Award-winning short film "Once Upon a Studio," the collection of experiences will feature playful and interactive moments around every corner as portraits come to life.
Guests will be able to step through the studio and see the wonder of animation come to life like never before — with the opportunity to pick up a pencil and learn how to draw a favorite Disney character.
Here is everything inside:
Drawn to Wonderland
The reimagined space features an indoor playground based on Alice in Wonderland — bringing Alice in Wonderland's bold colors and whimsical artistic style to life, creating a playful space where families can relax, recharge, and remain immersed in Disney storytelling.
This is the experience designed specifically for little ones and I am already picturing Lennon in there absolutely losing her mind. An indoor Alice in Wonderland playground is the kind of thing that makes a Hollywood Studios day genuinely magical for families with young kids.
Olaf Draws
This is the one I am most excited about and I will not apologize for it.
The experience features an Animation Academy hosted by an advanced Olaf Audio-Animatronics figure — a drawing class where guests learn from legendary Disney Animation artists through sessions hosted by Olaf.
There will also be the opportunity to pick up a pencil and learn how to draw a favorite Disney character.
An advanced Audio-Animatronic Olaf hosting an animation class designed for guests of all ages is genuinely one of the most creative and unique experiences Disney has added to any park in recent memory. There is nothing else like this currently at Walt Disney World. This alone is worth building your fall Hollywood Studios day around.
Off the Page
Off the Page is a character greeting space giving guests the opportunity to meet beloved Disney characters in a setting inspired by the animation studio itself. Character meets inside a beautifully themed space rather than a standard meet-and-greet line is exactly the kind of detail that makes a Disney experience feel elevated.
Once Upon a Studio Theater
The Magic of Disney Animation also features an art gallery where character portraits come to life and a theater showing "Once Upon a Studio" with new special effects.
If you have not seen the Emmy Award-winning short "Once Upon a Studio" — stop reading this right now and go watch it on Disney+. It is one of the most beautiful things Disney has produced in years and seeing it in a dedicated theater with new special effects is going to be extraordinary. It’s one of our favorites & Lennon refers to it as “Picture Movie”.
The Walt Disney Studios Lot Courtyard
The Magic of Disney Animation is located within the newly reimagined area called The Walt Disney Studios Lot — formerly known as Animation Courtyard — which has been open to guests since May 2026.
The courtyard itself is already alive with energy — a relaxed park-like setting designed for families to enjoy together, with character surprises and thoughtful details hidden throughout. If you have visited Hollywood Studios recently you have likely already walked through it. The building at the center — the one with Mickey's Sorcerer Hat perched on top — is what opens September 14th.
The area will continue to house "The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure" in the Studio Theater, as well as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! at the soundstage — meaning this entire corner of Hollywood Studios is becoming one of the richest areas in the park for families with young children.
A Brief History Worth Knowing
When Hollywood Studios opened in 1989, The Magic of Disney Animation allowed guests to tour the production facilities where beloved classics such as Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, and Brother Bear were being drawn to life at Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. In 2004 the Florida division of Walt Disney Feature Animation closed, and eleven years later The Magic of Disney Animation did as well.
And now it is coming back. Different. New. But rooted in the same spirit that made the original so beloved.
There is something deeply meaningful about that to me. The return of animation to Hollywood Studios — the craft, the wonder, the invitation to participate in the creative process rather than just observe it — feels like Disney honoring its own history while pointing toward its future at the same time.
Walt Disney was an animator. This is where it all started. Bringing that back to Hollywood Studios in this form feels right.
Why September 14th Is the Perfect Time to Visit
Let me be honest about the timing for a moment because I think it is worth saying clearly.
Disney previously indicated The Magic of Disney Animation would debut "later in summer 2026" — and September 14th represents a slight shift from that original expectation. But here is the thing — September 14th might actually be the best possible time for this to open.
September is one of the best months of the entire year to visit Disney World. School is back in session for most families across the country, which means crowds are significantly lower than they were during the heart of summer. The weather is beginning to improve. The parks have longer hours and the energy is still high from everything that launched during Cool Kids' Summer.
And now — starting September 14th — Hollywood Studios has one more extraordinary reason to visit.
A fall trip to Hollywood Studios means you get The Magic of Disney Animation, the Mandalorian and Grogu mission at Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Rock n Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live, Toy Story Land, Galaxy's Edge, Tower of Terror, and Slinky Dog Dash all in one park day.
Hollywood Studios in fall 2026 is genuinely one of the most stacked single-park experiences Walt Disney World has ever offered.
