October in North Carolina: Day Trips, Staycations & Fall Fun Close to Home πŸ‚

October might be my favorite month to live in North Carolina. The weather finally cools down, the leaves start changing, and there's something fun happening almost every weekend.

We live in Burlington, right in the middle of the state, and one of the best things about being here is how much is within driving distance. The mountains, the beach, big-city fun, farms, festivals... you can do so much in a day, a quick overnight, or without even leaving the county.

So whether you're planning a family adventure or a date night with your significant other, here's my list of October fun from right here in central NC. 🀍

Drive times are approximate from Burlington.

Close to Home: Local Fall Fun in Alamance County

You don't have to go far to make October feel special.

🎠 Burlington City Park A local favorite for a reason. City Park is home to the historic Dentzel Carousel, and a stroll through the park on a crisp fall day is simple, sweet fun. Check the City of Burlington's website for current carousel and ride hours before you go, since they run seasonally.

πŸ‚ Cedarock Park Trails, a creek, a historic farmstead, and plenty of room to run. Pack a picnic, wear your coziest flannel, and let the kids burn off some energy.

β˜• Downtown Burlington date night Grab dinner, get a coffee, and walk around downtown. Sometimes the best date is the one that's 10 minutes away and doesn't need a babysitter for the whole night.

A couple of my personal favorites for date night:

  • Burlington Beer Works 🍺 One of my go-to spots downtown. Grab a drink, share some food, and enjoy a night out without going far from home.

  • Tanners 🍽️ Another favorite of ours and perfect for a cozy fall date night.

Pumpkin Patches & Corn Mazes πŸŽƒπŸŒ½

Is it even fall if you don't get lost in a corn maze and take 100 pictures in a pumpkin patch? Here are our favorite farms around central NC.

🌽 Kersey Valley Maize Adventure, Archdale (about 45 minutes) A full day of fall fun on one ticket! The corn maze, train rides, a mega slide, adventure play areas and dinosaur discovery are all included. Gem mining and pumpkins are extra. Open Saturdays 11 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sundays 1–6 p.m. starting September 26, with $10 parking. It's right off I-85, so it's an easy drive.

For the grown-ups: Kersey Valley is also home to Spookywoods, their haunted attraction. That one is best saved for a date night or older kids, not the little ones. πŸ‘»

🚜 J. Razz & Tazz Farm, Gibsonville (about 15 minutes) Right between Burlington and Greensboro! This working farm has a big corn maze (day AND night), a pumpkin patch, cow train, playground, trike track, corn bins, haystack mountain and a bonfire. They also have a family-friendly haunted forest hayride. Open Friday through Sunday in the fall. Bring cash or a check, since they don't take cards.

πŸŽƒ Fogleman Farms, Liberty (about 30 minutes) A third-generation family farm in southern Alamance County with a pick-your-own pumpkin patch (with a hayride out to the field!), a 3-acre corn maze, a playground and a nature trail. Pet-friendly, too.

🌻 Iseley Farms, Burlington (right here at home!) A local pumpkin patch you don't have to drive far for. Perfect for a quick after-school pumpkin run.

🌽 McKee Cornfield Maze, Rougemont (about 45 minutes) A 12-acre corn maze plus a smaller kids' maze, hayrides, a pumpkin patch, farm animals, a barrel train, play areas and ice cream. Open September 26–October 31, Fridays 3–7 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.–7 p.m. and Sundays 1–6 p.m.

🍎 Smith Hollow Farm, Kernersville (about 50 minutes) Corn maze, hayrides, animals, and the fan favorites: apple launching and duck races. A great pick for kids who want to do something, not just walk around.

πŸ₯§ Whitaker Farms, Climax (about 45 minutes) Pumpkins plus a garden center, bakery and soft-serve ice cream. Come for the pumpkins, stay for the baked goods. πŸ˜‹

🐐 Smith's Family Fun Farm, Hillsborough (about 30 minutes) Another sweet family farm close to home with seasonal fall activities for the kids.

Tip: Most farms are open weekends only and hours can change with the weather, so check each farm's website or Facebook page before you head out.

Easy Day Trips (Under 1.5 Hours)

🎑 N.C. State Fair, Raleigh (about 1 hour) October 15–25, 2026. Rides, farm animals, giant pumpkins, and every fried food you can imagine. Go early on a weekday if you can to beat the crowds, and don't skip the livestock barns with the kids.

🦁 Boo at the NC Zoo, Asheboro (about 1 hour) October 17–18 and 24–25, 2026, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Costumes are encouraged! Kids can trick-or-treat along the Africa loop, play games, get their faces painted, do crafts and enter the noon costume contest. Wristbands are $10 (on top of regular zoo admission) and are only sold at the admission booths that day, not in advance.

🏺 Seagrove Pottery (about 1 hour) Pair it with the zoo! Seagrove is known for its pottery shops, and fall is a beautiful time to wander from shop to shop and pick up a handmade piece for your home.

πŸ”¬ Greensboro (about 30 minutes) The Greensboro Science Center is a great rainy-day option with an aquarium, zoo and museum all in one. Add dinner downtown and you have a full day.

🌳 Chapel Hill & Durham (30–45 minutes) Walk through Sarah P. Duke Gardens when the leaves start turning, visit the Museum of Life and Science with the kids, or grab dinner on Franklin Street for date night.

⛰️ Hanging Rock or Pilot Mountain State Parks (about 1–1.5 hours) The closest "mountain" views to us! Hike to the top for fall colors without driving all the way west. Hanging Rock has trails and waterfalls for different skill levels, and Pilot Mountain's summit views are hard to beat.

πŸ₯§ Mount Airy (about 1.5 hours) The real-life inspiration for Mayberry. Charming small-town main street, old-fashioned diners and a slower pace. It's a sweet, nostalgic day trip.

One-Night Getaways

Sometimes you just need one night away. Here are my favorite quick escapes.

πŸš‚ Blowing Rock & Boone: Tweetsie Railroad Ghost Train (about 2.5 hours) Friday and Saturday nights, September 25–October 31, 2026. Tweetsie turns into a Halloween night party with the Ghost Train, trick-or-treating on Main Street, a show, evening rides and more. Tickets are $65 for adults (13+) and $45 for kids 3–12, with little ones 2 and under free. Buy ahead! Some attractions (the Ghost Train ride, Haunted House and Freaky Forest) are spookier, so use your judgment with younger kids.

Make it a getaway: stay overnight in Blowing Rock and spend the next morning enjoying fall colors along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

🏰 Asheville & Biltmore (about 3 hours) Fall at Biltmore is gorgeous. The Luminere evening light and sound experience runs through October 18, and select tickets include free next-day grounds access. Tour the house, walk the gardens, and end the day with live music in Antler Hill Village. Plan for at least one full day on the estate. Buying tickets online ahead of time saves you $10 per ticket.

This one is a perfect couples getaway too. 🍷

🎒 Charlotte: Carowinds (about 1.75 hours) For the brave ones, SCarowinds runs on select nights through November 1 with haunted mazes and scare zones. For families with little ones, Carowinds also hosts a daytime Tricks and Treats event with trick-or-treating stations and a costume contest. Check Carowinds' calendar for daytime dates.

Fall Beach Trips to the Coast 🌊

Here's a little secret: fall might be the best time to go to the NC coast. The summer crowds are gone, rental rates usually drop, the weather is still warm, and the water holds onto some of that summer warmth into early October. Wilmington and the nearby beaches are about 2.5–3 hours from Burlington, perfect for a weekend or even a long one-night trip.

πŸ–οΈ Wrightsville Beach Just minutes from downtown Wilmington. Walk the beach, grab brunch, rent a paddleboard, or take a sunset stroll with your person. It's so peaceful once summer is over.

🎑 Carolina Beach & the Boardwalk A classic beach town feel with the boardwalk, ice cream, arcade fun and plenty of family-friendly restaurants. The kids will love it.

🐒 Kure Beach & Fort Fisher Visit the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher (a great rainy-day pick!), explore Fort Fisher State Historic Site, and take the kids to see the rocks and tide pools. You can even ride the Southport–Fort Fisher ferry for a fun, easy boat ride across the river.

🚒 Downtown Wilmington Walk the Riverwalk, tour the Battleship North Carolina across the river, browse the shops and grab dinner downtown. Fun fact: tons of movies and TV shows have filmed here, so fans can hunt down their favorite filming spots (One Tree Hill or The Summer I Turned Pretty fans, this one's for you πŸ˜‰).

🌳 Airlie Gardens Gorgeous gardens, a huge old oak tree, and walking paths that are beautiful in any season. It's a sweet spot for family photos, too.

Coastal fall festivals & events

  • Farewell Summer Jazz Funeral, Kure Beach: Friday, October 2. A fun, quirky New Orleans–style send-off to summer with costumes, masks and live music.

  • Fire in the Pines Festival, Wilmington: Saturday, October 10. Family-friendly with crafts, kids' games, hayrides, animals, food trucks and live music.

  • Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues & Jazz Festival, Kure Beach. Usually held the second weekend in October at Fort Fisher. Check their website for 2026 dates.

  • NC Oyster Festival, Ocean Isle Beach: October 17–18. Arts and crafts, live music, local food and oyster shucking contests. Note: no pets, coolers, backpacks or outside food.

  • For date night: The Voracious Rare Beer Festival (Oct 23) and the Lighthouse Beer & Wine Festival (Oct 24) are both in Wilmington. Grab a sitter and make it a grown-up getaway! 🍷

A travel advisor tip for fall beach trips

Hurricane season runs through November 30, so a little planning goes a long way. Look for flexible cancellation policies when you book a hotel or rental, and consider travel insurance for longer trips. Keep an eye on the forecast the week before you go. (This is exactly the kind of thing I help my clients think through, whether the trip is to Disney or to the coast!)

When to See the Leaves 🍁

NC State's fall foliage forecast says to expect:

  • High elevations (4,000–5,000 ft): mid-October

  • Lower mountains and foothills: late October to early November

  • Piedmont (that's us!): late October to early November

They also note this year may be more of a "patchwork" of color because of drought and warmer temps, so plan a little flexibility into your leaf-peeping trips.

Bringing the Magic Home This October ✨

When we can't be at Disney World, we bring a little of the magic home. A few of our favorite October traditions:

  • Disney Halloween movie night with popcorn and blankets (Hocus Pocus, anyone? More on this coming soon!)

  • Carving or painting Mickey pumpkins

  • Themed treats and a family costume at the pumpkin patch

  • Planning our next Disney trip together over hot chocolate β˜•

And if all this fall fun has you dreaming about celebrating Halloween at Disney next year, I'd love to help you plan it. Disney World in the fall is truly magical.

Fill out my travel inquiry form here and let's start planning. 🀍

Whether you stay local, take a day trip or sneak away for a night, I hope you make some sweet memories this October.

xoxo,
Katie
