Talk to Me Thursday: Anyone Else Tired of All the Junk in Our Products?

Lately I’ve found myself going down a lot of ingredient rabbit holes.

And honestly… it’s been eye opening.

Over the last year or two, our family has been trying to make small changes toward a healthier lifestyle. Nothing extreme. Just becoming more aware of what we’re actually putting in our bodies and on our bodies.

But the deeper you look, the more you start to realize something that’s honestly a little frustrating…

There are so many unnecessary ingredients in everyday products.

Dyes.

Artificial additives.

Seed oils.

Ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Ingredients that don’t even need to be there in the first place.

And once you start noticing it… you really can’t unsee it.

Things Definitely Aren’t What They Used to Be

One thing I keep coming back to in all of this is the realization that things just aren’t what they used to be when we were growing up.

Food was simpler. Ingredient lists were shorter. Products didn’t have pages of things we can’t pronounce.

And while I know every generation probably says something like that, when you actually start reading labels today, it’s hard not to notice how much has changed.

So many foods now are ultra-processed and filled with additives, dyes, and oils that weren’t nearly as common years ago. The same goes for skincare, supplements, and even products made specifically for kids.

And as a mom, that’s where it really started to hit me.

When you start thinking about what your kids are eating, what you’re cooking with, and what you’re putting on your skin every day, it makes you want to start asking more questions.

Not from a place of fear — but from a place of wanting to do better when you know better.

The Ingredient Wake-Up Call

For me, this journey really started with food.

Reading labels at the grocery store. Looking up ingredients I didn’t recognize. Realizing that a lot of the things marketed as “healthy” really… weren’t.

Then that awareness slowly started creeping into everything else.

Skincare.

Supplements.

Cleaning products.

Even things marketed specifically for kids.

The more I researched, the more I realized how many products are filled with fillers, preservatives, artificial colors, and low-quality oils simply because they’re cheaper for companies to use.

Not because they’re better for us.

And that was definitely a bit of a wake-up call.

The Truth: It Can Feel Overwhelming

I’ll be honest… once you start researching ingredients, it can feel like everything is bad.

And that’s not exactly a fun place to be.

There have definitely been moments where I’ve thought:

“Okay but what ARE we supposed to use then?”

It’s a lot.

Especially when you’re a busy working mom juggling work, family, activities, and everything else life throws your way.

No one has time to become a full-time ingredient detective.

What We’ve Learned

Instead of trying to overhaul everything overnight, we’ve taken a much simpler approach.

We focus on small swaps when we can.

Cleaner snacks.

Better oils.

Products with simpler ingredient lists.

Skincare and wellness products that prioritize ingredients that actually benefit our bodies.

Not perfect.

Just better than before.

And honestly? That mindset shift has been a game changer for us.

It’s About Progress, Not Perfection

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through all of this, it’s that you don’t have to do everything all at once.

You don’t have to throw out your entire pantry.

You don’t have to become a full-time ingredient expert overnight.

Just start becoming more aware.

Start reading labels.

Start asking questions.

Because once you know what’s in something, you get to decide whether it belongs in your life or not.

And that kind of awareness is powerful.

Talk To Me

I’m curious…

Have you started paying more attention to ingredients in the products you use?

Is there anything you’ve cut out or tried to reduce in your home?

Or are you just starting to learn about all of this like I was not that long ago?

And if you’d like, I’d be happy to share some of the swaps we’ve made in our house that have helped simplify things and make choosing better ingredients a little easier.

Let me know — I’d love to share what’s been working for us.

xoxo,

Katie
