Live-Action Moana Is Here — My Honest Pre-Show Thoughts (No Spoilers, I Promise)

Hey friends, today's the day! Disney's live-action Moana officially sails into theaters, and I have to be honest with you — I'm writing this post before I've actually seen it. I wanted to get my thoughts, expectations, and everything I know down on "paper" while the excitement is still fresh, and then I'll be back with a full reaction once I've seen it myself (probably with popcorn in one hand and tissues in the other, if we're being real).

So let's talk about what's coming, why this one feels special, and what I'm hoping for.

Why Moana Means So Much to Me

Before we get into cast and details, I have to say this: Moana is genuinely one of my absolute favorite Disney movies of this newer generation. Not just "fun to watch with my kid" favorite — I mean it hits different for me.

There's something about a girl who feels this pull toward something bigger, who's told to stay where it's safe, and who chooses to go anyway — because deep down she knows that's who she's meant to be. If that's not the story of building a dream while everyone around you is still figuring out if it's "practical," I don't know what is. I think about my dad every time I hear "How Far I'll Go," honestly. He's the reason I love Disney the way I do, and that song has this way of feeling like both a permission slip and a promise all at once.

So yeah — I have a little extra something riding on this one being good.

What Live-Action Moana Is All About

This live-action reimagining follows the same heart as the 2016 animated original: Moana, daughter of Chief Tui, answers the call of the ocean and sails beyond the reef of her home island of Motunui for the first time. Alongside the demigod Maui, she sets out on a journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti and bring life back to her people and their land.

In theaters: Today, July 10, 2026 — landing exactly on the 10th anniversary of the original animated film's debut. If that's not a full-circle Disney moment, I don't know what is.

Meet the Cast

Catherine Laga'aia as Moana — This is huge. Catherine is an 18-year-old Australian actress of Samoan heritage, and this is her feature film debut. Auli'i Cravalho (who voiced Moana in both animated films) made the choice not to reprise the role live-action, specifically so a new Pacific Islander performer could step into the role. I love that so much.

Dwayne Johnson as Maui — The Rock is back, and he's officially the first Disney performer to play the same character in both an animated film and its live-action adaptation. From what I've seen in the trailers, the tattoos, the hair, the whole vibe — it's exactly what you'd hope for.

John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala round out Moana's family, bringing the heart of the story to life.

It's directed by Thomas Kail (yes, the Hamilton Thomas Kail), with a screenplay from Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, and new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda — including a brand-new song written specifically for this version, with Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho, and Catherine Laga'aia all part of the vocals. I have chills just thinking about that combination.

Where It Was Filmed

They filmed on location in Oahu, Hawaii, and Atlanta, Georgia, between July and November 2024 — meaning real ocean, real village sets, real everything. After years of fully animated worlds, I am SO ready to see this story told with real landscapes and real light on the water.

What I'm Hoping For (Going in With Zero Spoilers)

Okay, real talk. Going into any live-action remake, I always have a little bit of nervous excitement — you know the feeling. Here's what I'm personally hoping this movie delivers:

  • That same fierce, determined Moana energy — she's never needed a love interest to be a hero, and I hope this version honors that just as strongly as the original.

  • A Maui who's funny but still has heart — Dwayne Johnson has big shoes to fill, but if the trailers are any indication, he's bringing it.

  • Music that hits just as hard — "How Far I'll Go" is one of those songs that lives rent-free in every mom's head (mine included), so the bar is high.

  • A story that still feels like it belongs to the Pacific Islander community it represents — representation matters, and I'm hopeful this cast and crew did that justice.

Are You Seeing It Today?

I would love to know — are you headed to the theater for opening day, or are you waiting for a quieter weekend showing? If you've already seen it (lucky you), drop a spoiler-free reaction in the comments, because I am DYING to know what to expect before I go.

And don't worry — once I've actually watched it myself, I'll be back with my full, honest thoughts on a future Talk to Me Thursday. No sugar-coating, promise. Just real reactions from a real mom who grew up loving Disney and is still just as excited for a new one today.

Real life, real magic, real anticipation. Let's go see this movie. 🌊🐔✨

xoxo,
Katie
