How to Save with Disney: Real Tips That Actually Move the Needle

Disney trips have a reputation for being expensive — and okay, they can be. But after helping families plan trip after trip, I promise you there are real, practical ways to save that don't involve skipping the magic. Here's what actually works.

Book at the Right Time

This is the one people skip the most, and it costs them the most. Prices, room categories, and dining reservations don't wait around — the earlier you lock in dates, the more options (and often the better rates) you have access to. Waiting until "closer to the trip" almost always means fewer choices and higher prices, not better ones. If a trip is even a maybe for you right now, getting a plan in place early gives you room to catch deals as they come out instead of scrambling last minute.

Take Advantage of Deals — But Know Where to Look

Disney does release discounts throughout the year, but they're not always obvious, and they're not one-size-fits-all. Some are tied to specific dates, resort tiers, or room types. This is honestly one of the biggest reasons families work with an advisor instead of booking solo — I'm watching for these windows so you don't have to refresh a website hoping something drops. When a deal fits your trip, I can apply it or help you rebook to take advantage of it.

Use Discounted Gift Cards to Pay for Your Trip

This one is a total game-changer and so many families don't know about it.

  • Target RedCard — using your RedCard to purchase Disney gift cards gets you a discount right off the bat, and then you use those gift cards toward your trip.

  • BJ's Wholesale — often sells discounted Disney gift cards, especially around certain promo periods.

  • Sam's Club — same idea — keep an eye out for discounted gift card bundles you can stockpile over time and apply straight to your Disney balance.

The beauty of this method is that it doesn't feel like "extra effort" — you're just being intentional about how you pay for things you were going to buy anyway, and letting that discount chip away at your Disney balance a little at a time.

Do a Grocery Order Before You Go

If you're staying on Disney property, you can have groceries delivered right to your resort before you even check in. My go-to for this is Vacation Grocery Delivery — they make it so easy to have everything waiting for you when you arrive. This is one of our family's favorite money-saving moves. We stock up on breakfast items, snacks, and drinks for the room, which cuts down on how much we're spending on food throughout the trip.

Bring Your Own Food Into the Parks

Yes, you can bring outside food into Disney parks — and if you have little ones, this is one of the easiest ways to save on food costs without anyone feeling like they're missing out.

Our go-to lunch combo: an Uncrustable, an orange, and a bag of chips. It's easy to pack, doesn't need to stay cold for long, and keeps the kids fed and happy without paying kids' meal prices at every stop. We just find a bench, have our little picnic, and get back to the magic — no meltdowns over long lines at a quick service spot in the middle of a hot afternoon.

This one small habit alone can save a family a real chunk of money over the course of a multi-day trip, especially if you're feeding more than one or two kids.

Little Changes, Real Savings

None of these tips require sacrificing the magic of the trip. It's really about being intentional — with your timing, your payment method, and even what's in your backpack. Small decisions like these add up to real dollars saved, which means more room in the budget for the things that matter most to your family.
